LabBooks

Laurence Cathala, Sébastien Dégeilh, Jérôme Dupeyrat and Olivier Huz

LabBooks is a research programme that aims to extend the notion of writing to all dimensions of editorial practice, by showing why and how “the writing” of books can contribute to the production of discourse and thought, or even guide it, whether in the field of art, literature, or other fields such as cinema, music, or pedagogy.

The philosophy of the LabBooks course reveals that by considering the book holistically—whose writing can obviously be textual, but also visual, graphic, and editorial—we can broach various categories of publications using a multidisciplinary approach: artist’s books, bookworks, art books, visual literature, scores, and manuals.
It also transpires that writing books not only tends towards the definition of a personal style, but it can extend the work and its reception towards interpretation, performance, or diverse forms of activation more generally, since the book contains the conditions for extending beyond its pages, or offers an anticipation of future practices, reception, production, and situations.

At all events, publication emerges as a discursive process and the book or printed form as a tool for (re)formulation and statement. One predictable effect of this approach is also that of overturning the logic that sees publication as a final phase in the research process—one that is strictly communicative, akin to recording—whereas it may in fact be its driving force.

The research programme is conducted by way of a seminar, as well as through conferences, field trips, and art and editorial projects.
